Charity According to Newman’s social history of the Cistercians, “spiritual growth was impossible without the love and aid that a monk offered and received from his brothers” (Newman, 1996: 65). In a bid to keep this Cistercian emphasis on active charity alive, we are asking people who would like to support us as we attempt to complete the Monks’ Trod ride to make a donation to one (or both) of our chosen charity, World Horse Welfare. This seems to be particularly pertinent in relation to Strata Florida, as while charity was a fundamental tenet of the Cistercian order, as noted by Newman (1996) there is evidence to suggest that the monks at this particular house were not always particularly charitable themselves...
